The quest to find hardcore movies that don’t insult the intelligence is eternal. For many years, the “Tegn” or “Sign” movies from Denmark have held a special place in perverts’ hearts. Unlike most other countries, the Danish mainstream film industry embraced hardcore moviemaking. It wasn’t banned, or driven underground, or left in the hands of “auteurs” with a camera and enough blow to keep their leading guys and gals on the set. Instead, there were movies with actual production values, actual decent acting featuring stars from mainstream Danish movies, and yes, actual sex. As near as I can tell, there are six movies in the series, from 1973 to 1978. One assumes they were aiming for all twelve signs of the zodiac, but didn’t quite make it.
This is the first one in the series, named I Jomfruens Tegn, or “The Sign of the Virgin”. An astrologer on his way to lecture at a girls’ school is waylaid at a brothel. A number of horoscopic misunderstandings involving the phrase “I’m a Virgin!” follow. In the meantime, the girls’ school welcomes a new virginal student (initiating her with the most cruel food fight you’re likely to see on screen), and just to confuse the plot even more, a scientist appears in town with a libido-enhancing elixir. The combination of virgins, Virgins, and libido drugs that end up in the water supply leads to trouble indeed. Trouble with a capital T which rhymes with G and that stands for Group Sex in said brothel.
So what’s the hardcore like? There are some beaver shots. There are some cum shots. There’s enough penetration shots that you can be sure the sex is for real. What I Jomfruens Tegn doesn’t have is the usual obsessive focus on all three. Hardcore’s there, and it’s part of the story, but they don’t rub your face in it. This is one reason why this series of movies has been popular for thirty years now.
Fans of realistic sexiness have a number of nice scenes to enjoy. There’s a scene where a girl gets shaved (where would 1970s Danish pornography be without shaving scenes!). One of the best scenes is of one of the schoolgirls trying to get some sex from a guy with a flaccid dick. It’s pretty hilarious watching her pout and struggle with it. The same girl is also involved in a nice scene involving phone sex, with some frantic fingering. There’s also a really lovely (and soapy) lesbian scene between two of the girls, set in a bathtub, with one of the girls desperately trying to seduce the other. The film is also inclusive of a dream sequence with boobs and butts and erect penises (set to Ravel’s Bolero) that’s a visual freak-out worthy of a Ken Russell film.
How much you enjoy this movie depends on how much slapstick comedy you can stand with your sex. It’s an acquired taste, I know. There are plenty of German softcore movies from the 1970s with the same sort of slapstick sensibility, but maybe the “Tegn” movies one-up them with the hardcore elements. Plus, the girls in the movie, of which there are about 12, are universally cute, young, and have natural bodies. And all of them get in the action in one way or another. Hot 1970s Danish girls in hardcore action in a professional movie that doesn’t reek of the grindhouse? That’s hard to beat!
