Bavarian Sex Comedy Collection

We here at Softcore Reviews have certainly lodged our complaints about the German softcore movies of the 1970s: the wacky sped-up sex scenes, the ubiquitous haylofts, the skiing stunts, the silliness vs. steaminess factor. Seriously, how can anything be steamy in the Alps? These movies tend to be about as hot as a winter morning.

And yet, they exist. Here are four of them, in a very convenient DVD set sold for a reasonable price from Secret Key Motion Pictures. These movies date from the early 1970s and are pretty standard examples of the German sex comedy. Until someone gets around to releasing the much better Liebesgrüße aus der Lederhose or Schulmädchen Report series in the US, this is probably the best introduction currently available.

These movies are calling out – yodeling, you might say – for a serious academic treatment to be written about them. Someone needs to, uh, deconstruct the metaphorical and sociological semiotics behind what these nutty alpine larks mean in relation to the otherwise serious German character. I mean, come on, that absurdly oversized Ricola hunting horn is not just meant to sell lozenges – it’s a giant phallus, people!

While I’m at it… seriously.  Why the haylofts?  Why is sex always carried out in front of farm animals?  And what’s the deal with stabbing guys in the ass with a pitchfork?  Why is that so funny?

We’ll leave these weighty matters for someone else to figure out. In the meantime, here’s our shitty reviews of the four movies in this collection. The first one is new; the rest have already appeared on this site.

So don’t expect to fog up your sauna with these tepid movies; but if you’re really curious about them, you could do far worse than to drop a $20 for this, as it offers a lot of content. Or for that matter, just rent Disc 1 from Netflix, as three of the four films are on the first disc and only one (Run Virgin Run, the worst of the four) is on the second disc.
